PROJECT NAME: REFLECTIONS PARK
PROJECT TYPE: BRANDING
& BOOK DESIGN
YEAR: 2023
A diverse team of multidisciplinary designers, organized by SCAD Serve and the Butler Street CDC, collaborated to promote Reflections Park. Our client’s mission is to preserve and uplift the historic Sweet Auburn district in Atalanta by reimagining urban spaces, including the new park. Over the span of 10 weeks, our team combined our skills to develop branding, a website, and a fundraising plan for this real-world project.
TEAM MEMBERS: SCOTT BOYLSTON (MENTOR), ADITI BALAPURE, RICHIE FORD, FORREST HOWARD, LIA HUR, SABINA PAREJA - LECAROS, MUSKAAN MAINI, TAYLOR DEAS - MELESH, PRECIOUS NUTIFAFA, EMMA OSINSKI, JOY PETERSON, TANYA SHAH
During the logo brainstorming process, the team drew inspiration from Sweet Auburn's rich history as a center of black culture and a pivotal location in the civil rights movement. The significance of Sweet Auburn's history was a key factor in shaping the branding for Reflections Park. The Sankofa symbol, meaning "to retrieve" or "go back and fetch what you forgot," resonated strongly with both the team and the client. It embodies the concept of learning from the past to move forward. Additionally, birds, representing nature, freedom, and nurturing, were influential in the logo's design. The introduction of a new park in the area warranted emphasis, and the team aimed to subtly incorporate tree symbolism to highlight the park's natural essence, opting for a green leaf shape surrounding the Sankofa. Ultimately, the logo serves as a symbol for Sweet Auburn, honoring its past while paving the way for future generations.
LOGO DEVELOPMENT
PROCESS BOOK
Teaming up with Joy Petterson, I co-created an 80-page process book summarizing our 10-week project. This comprehensive document encompasses our research, design process, and final outcomes. It includes style guides for the branding, an overview of website development, and fundraising strategies. Recognizing that this book would be handed off to Butler Street CDC's board members, we also provided instructions on editing the website, setting up fundraising events, and examples of social media posts.
